2020 - Finalist
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
This collection is an exploration of the conceptions of design as art and constitutes a visual representation of the creative processes I follow when painting. These artistic processes were reenacted as much as possible in my design process for this collection, and informed the creation of the garments themselves.
I drew direct inspiration from the gap exposed by my reading of Deleuze’s “The Concept of the Diagram” between my creative processes as an painter and as a designer. This project explored the closing of that gap and attempted to reconcile my two creative modes into one unified production process.
None of the materials are presented in the final piece as they were bought, all are transformed in some way in terms of texture. White fabrics were chosen to mirror the blank painting canvas ‘starting from scratch’. Material was embroidered, painted, felted and dyed, and each garment leans toward one type of texture. Complimentary pieces were created from the scraps from the main pieces to mirror the importance of the whole canvas, and as a recognition of zero waste design.
