Nettle, Bamboo and Wool: Innovative Materials at the 9th BIAAF
The ninth edition of the prestigious BIAAF contest has been notable for the use of innovative materials in the winning collections, underlining the importance of sustainability and creativity in contemporary fashion.
Belinda Gredig won the award in Category A for her collection “Urtica Dioica”, which explores the convergence of nettle and glass. Using local, hand-spun nettle fibers in various shades, Gredig combined these yarns to create fabrics rich in texture and color. She also incorporated flame-worked borosilicate glass, reflecting on the coexistence of multiple disciplines in textile design.
In Category B, Shiyu Gong was awarded for his project “The Hypochrites”, which uses bamboo and black leather to create fashion accessories that challenge traditional body shapes. Gong, who comes from a family with a long tradition of bamboo craftsmanship, has fused this heritage with his interest in luxury goods, demonstrating how natural materials can be reimagined in contemporary contexts.
Ane García, from the Basque Country, was awarded the KM0 award for her project “A Post-Industrial Babylon”. Inspired by the figure of the “contemporary flâneur”, she used latxa sheep fleece, a material traditionally discarded after shearing, embroidered on neoprene and woolen cloth. This combination of materials creates an innovative and sustainable silhouette that reflects the industrial and rural history of the Basque Country.
BIAAF not only celebrates emerging talent, but also emphasizes the importance of supporting young designers who are committed to innovation and sustainability. These designers are redefining fashion through the use of recycled and natural materials, promoting practices that minimize environmental impact and encourage cultural diversity.
