The new exhibition from the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao
The Gugenheim Museum in Bilbao launches a new
and spectacular exhibition on September 21, The Thannhauser legacy, from Van
Gogh to Picasso, where works by great names of Impressionism and
Post-Impressionism will be exhibited, together with pieces by the first modern
masters, such as Van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas, Manet and Picasso.
The artworks, which are exhibited for the first
time outside New York, are part of the Thannhauser Collection from the funds of
the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Justin K. Thannhauser stood out as a
remarkable art dealer in the US and Europe, and in 1963 he announced that he
was bequeathing to the New York Guggenheim a collection of works from his
private collection that included masterpieces by the most important artists of
the last century. His widow, Hilde Thannhauser, extended these funds with
additional donations to the Museum in 1984 and 1991.
The Thannhauser Collection explores the work of
avant-garde artists who sought to liberate art from genres and academic media.
The first works that integrate the Guggenheim funds, which focus especially on
abstraction, directly drink this formal and stylistic break. «From Van
Gogh to Picasso. The Thannhauser legacy documents Thannhauser’s commitment to
some of the pioneering artists of his time and highlights the vision of the
family and his unwavering support for experimental art, which is still alive in
the Guggenheim. «
