Memento Mori
MEMENTO MORI is inspired by the way old people dress and the silhouettes they create. It is about the fact that we are all mortal. However, fashion can be a tool to stay and feel forever young while fighting against the unstoppable nature of the transience of life.
The art movement of Vanitas, with its rich and colourful bouquets representing the transience of life, serves as a continuous source of inspiration. The strong colour palette in the movies of film maker Pedro Almodóvar served as graphic inspiration for the collection, especially the contrasting of strong colours with black.
I created feminine but also fun and playful outfits, focusing on fabric manipulations like plissé; felting; screen printing; machine knitting; quilting; cut outs and appliqués; and digital prints of hand drawn sketches. Each silhouette is finished with a pair of socks, reminding of orthopedic stockings, as well as clogs.
