Beste Reizigers
Three art works worn on the body portraying the Dutch story of the culture of hectic contemporary train travel combined with opulent journeys with l’Orient Express. I want to evoke the mixed bag of feelings train travel can give, the comfort of going home, or the excitement of traveling afar.
In 2017 the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), is to address passengers with the gender neutral “beste reizigers”, rather than the traditional “ladies and gentlemen”. The inspiration for the work stems from endless stories from both my parents, grandfather and great-grandfathers, who all have been employed by the Dutch railway company NS. The codes, lines, shapes and colours that were created for the corporate identity of the NS provoked a design process.
Printed polyester fabric. Pleated skirt made from worn, polyester wool blend NS uniforms. recycled acryl faux fur shoulder piece shaped as headrests seen in older Dutch trains. Shoulderbag made from NS seat coverings. An NS polyester fleece, soft-shell jacket was transformed into a bodywarmer finished with faux leather piping. upcycled foldable bike handbag, vintage 1930’s hatbox in distressed and gum covered seat textile. Polyester waterproof suit with cotton piping. Upcyled NS service hat painted yellow.
