Cheng-Zong Yu
Taiwan
the Cyberflâneur in Taiwan
In Taiwan, daily internet usage averages over 6 hours, consuming nearly 34GB of data. Cheng-Zong uses this data in artistic endeavors, exploring visual attire based on LINE apps, Google Maps, and Midjourney. These images inspire prints that embody data streams and become wearable art.
Recent growth in Net art, technology, big data, and NFTs has broadened digital art’s scope. Central to contemporary art is digital collage and software manipulation. Drawing inspiration from Kazuki Umezawa, Faig Ahmed, and Lev Manovich, these works capture the artists’ essence rather than replicating their style, transforming the creation process.
Cheng-Zong seeks materials from daily life for two reasons: connection to his upbringing and Taiwanese culture, and a desire to support environmental conservation. Using everyday materials like discarded metal threads and surplus ribbons, he transforms them through printing and weaving. This process weaves “Data Threads” into pattern-making, creating a piece that bridges real life and the virtual world.
