This project deals with the renewal of an iconic fashion piece, I chose to recreate the Safari Jacket. The project conveys the story of colonialism ,which gave birth to the Safari Suit, through the “Heart of Darkness” novel by Joseph Conard and the illustrations of it made by Matt Kish.
“Heart of Darkness” describes a time when slaves were transported in cargo ships. Everyday I commute on bus 142, the modern slavery cargo, which goes all the way from the city’s poorer areas to the diamond markets. This journey combined with Matt Kish’s illustrations were my inspiration forthe project.
The materials come from the surroundings I encountered while traveling bus 142, like towels hanging on the clothes lines out of the windows in the poorer areas, and the crocheted fabric I created inspired by the bus seat. As well as materials used in the original Safari suit.
