Transient Dada

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

TRANSIENT DADA was devised as a Lego-like group of interchangeable wearable items, where functional corsets acted as bases where different pieces could be collaged. This aimed to challenge current prevalent ownership models of fashion, where fashion items are mostly regarded as personal items linked to private property, ownership and use.

INSPIRATION

The “Superstudio” literature allowed for a conceptual framework (corsets) on to which the Dadaist collages could be attached. Initially inspired by the symbolism of the Dutch vanitas paintings where symbols were “translated” into standalone fashion pieces. The process itself is a reflection on the post-modern condition, characterised by fragmented knowledge.

MATERIALS USED

The silhouettes have an Elizabethan base corset in unbleached cotton with flat steel boning. They were later modified to include a harness-type structure, the bike wheel and the picnic set. The collection has fragmented garment overlays made in wool and nylon, with contrasting textures, as well as a color diagram.
