Caught in Excess
DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
My collection "Caught in Excess" is based on heroin chic. My design intent is to bring subcultural context into a modern, homogenous look through developing new interpretations of its aspects and characteristics. My looks are based on layering of rough and light materials which are either plain or have prints.
I was inspired by how heroin chic changed the perception of beauty in fashion, photography, music and art and I took a closer look at its most important influences in the 1990s. I combined these inspiration aspects by using certain materials, fabrics, colors and patterns.
Patterns from microscopic images of drugs printed on chiffon show drug addiction during heroin chic. Heavy leather represents it‘s roughness. Old and new jeans with raw-edge seams give the typical torn and faded look. Details made from steel with patina resemble decay and sepia colors found in photographs.
