A Sense of Things

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

A Sense Of Things is a womenswear collection that combines rich, crafted surfaces, psychedelic patterns and transparent layers.  My goal was to transform simple garments with three-dimensional textures, much like Joel D’Orazio, who’s sculptures inspired the collection, does to chairs.

INSPIRATION

My collection was inspired by Joel D’Orazio’s fringed chair sculptures. Art has an important role in challenging existing perceptions, which is what art like this does through the transformation of the mundane. The collection’s name: A Sense Of Things refers to both this, as well as the rich and tactile textures used in the garments.

MATERIALS USED

The collection consists of various materials and techniques, the most prominent of which is the hand-made fringe surface, made in the traditional Finnish rya technique, with the assistance of rya artist Ama Essel. In addition to this the collection plays with transparent textures: leather that is cut to resemble net, translucent knitwear pieces, and netting.
