Ethnic Corset

DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK

I have started by deconstructing a replica of the 19th century corset and realized myself all the techniques used in the past, such as cording, boning and lacing.

Instead of using traditional whale bones I have used plastic bones and started using them as sculpturing material around the whole body. After sewing the dress from natural materials, I added the plastic bones covered with colored fabrics embroidered and beaded.

INSPIRATION

I have started researching the corset, especially 19th century European corset and beads corset among the Dinka males in south Sudan.

During the process of research, I encountered the corsets worn by Frida Khalo in Mexico. Her strong personality and her attitude towards her body and cloths fascinated me. Frida has used her bodily appearances, corsets and cloths as expression of her personality, pain, love and art. She wore European inspired cloths as well as Ethnic garments as a testimony to the complexity of her identity.

MATERIALS USED

During the process I used natural fabrics such as linen and some of them I painted by myself. The project includes sewing of plastic bones wrapped by embroidered fabric with beads and threads of different colors.
